Cyprus non-domicile status explained

Being tax resident in Cyprus and being domiciled here are two different things, and the difference is what most people are actually asking about.

Migrated from your existing site and rewritten. The mechanism is right but I have deliberately not stated the year thresholds or rates — you should insert the current figures and re-date the article.

The distinction that matters

Cyprus taxes residents on worldwide income. Separately, it levies Special Defence Contribution on certain investment income. Non-domicile status affects the second, not the first. That is the point people most often misunderstand: it is not a general exemption from Cyprus tax.

What non-domicile status covers

An individual who is tax resident in Cyprus but not domiciled here is exempt from Special Defence Contribution on dividends, interest and rental income. Income tax, capital gains tax on Cyprus property, and social contributions are unaffected.

How domicile is determined

Cyprus uses domicile of origin as the starting point, with a rule that treats a person as domiciled here once they have been tax resident for a set number of years within a longer look-back period. Confirm the current figures before relying on them — this is the detail that changes.

How long it lasts

Non-domicile status is time limited. Anyone planning around it should know the end date from the beginning, because the position changes materially when it expires.

Who it suits

Individuals with substantial dividend or interest income relocating to Cyprus. It is far less relevant to someone whose income is mainly salary, where the ordinary income tax rules do the work.

Talk it through
